Mena - Polk County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on June 9.
The City of Mena, the Mena Advertising & Promotion Commission, and the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce welcomed in around 375 cyclists and their support personnel from the Oklahoma Freewheel cycling tour on Monday, June 6.
As the group rolled in, they were fed lunch and dinner by Mena First Baptist Church. Many in the group walked or cycled to many area businesses during their visit. They camped out in Janssen Park and were cooked an early breakfast by the Masonic Lodge on Tuesday, June 7, before heading out again. Their next stop was set to be Poteau, Oklahoma on Wednesday, with their final destination being Galena, Kansas. They are set to arrive in Kansas on Saturday.
Oklahoma Freewheel is an annual event and has a different route each year. Everyone truly enjoyed the area and many are already making plans to come back to visit.
Also, big props to the luggage team! Not only did they unload luggage on Monday and reload it on Tuesday (at 5 a.m.), they also set up a couple dozen tents and took them down the next day as well! We truly appreciate your volunteerism and heart for our community!
