CHEROKEE VILLAGE: From The Mayor

Speaker

Cherokee Village issued the following announcement on May 3.

Covid-19 cases continue to decline in our area but the new variant which has arisen has not reached us. There are still questions as to how serious the new variant may be and how effective the vaccine is against it. Also, questions are being raised about the need for an additional booster. Again, consult with your primary health provider before making decisions about your personal well-being.

Last month I spoke of Spring storms. Obviously, we had a serious storm that struck our community replete with wind and hail. It appears the worst damages were the result of the hail. Currently, insurance adjusters are hard at work assessing and evaluating the needs of property owners. After this process is complete and you wish to engage a contractor to repair the damages to your home; please determine they are licensed to do the work, have registered with the city, can provide references, are insured, and will agree to a contract in writing. It is also a good idea to seek more than one estimate of repair work. Supply chain issues coupled with rising material costs may require long periods of waiting before work can be completed by trustworthy contractors. Please be patient and make a quality decision on who you wish to do your work with.

Fortunately, the weekend storm did not stop the Pie Festival. All of the activities took place and pie samples were enjoyed by many. Our first 5k run was a successful event with approximately 60 runners and walkers. Moreover, at the Ozark Gateway Regional Tourism banquet in Batesville on April 28th, the festival was recognized with the Presidential Award. The award recognized the Pie Festival as the most outstanding event for the north-central region of the state. This is quite an accomplishment for an event in only its second year.

Congratulations

to the Pie Festival Committee and all the volunteers who made this achievement possible.

Also, the city received a $7,500 grant for our Animal Control Facility from PETCO. We have established a working relationship with PETCO which periodically makes us eligible for grants from that corporation. These funds coupled with community donations provide much-needed aid in caring for the animals housed at our facility as well as improvements in the animal housing.

The city sales tax asking for an additional one-percent increase will be on the May 24th ballot. The rationale for the increase was presented at a forum earlier in April followed by a question/answer session on April 26th. The rationale and question/answer information is posted on our city website for you to access. If you desire printed copies of the information they may be picked up at City Hall. Please vote YES on May 24th to support the sales tax increase. Your yes vote will enable us to maintain effective services for our citizens through our Fire and Street Departments plus retain quality employees in our city workforce.
