Lyon College Athletics issued the following announcement on Mar. 17.

As the new president of Lyon College, Dr. Melissa Taverner knows that the future of the institution depends on more than just her voice. In every conversation, she believes “there’s an opportunity for everyone involved to learn something.”

“I am fully aware that I don't know everything, nor can any one person ever” she said. “I absolutely value people’s perspectives, their experiences, and their areas of expertise.”

Taverner continued, “I want people to know I am always going to be open to listening and learning together.”

For her, being the president of Lyon College means being a good steward of the institution, supporting and strengthening the extraordinary educational opportunities for students while ensuring the College operates sustainably long into the future.

“Lyon is this wonderful opportunity, in a safe and supportive community, for people to grow into the person they never imagined.”

Financial stability is a constant challenge for higher education in the 21st century, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, Taverner said, and the College has to be honest about those challenges while embracing its core mission and planning for a bright future.

“That means the institution has to be sustainable in the long term, and that we have to be fiscally responsible.”

She continued, “The president’s role is in part about making sure Lyon is positioned for a healthy and successful future. It certainly includes setting big goals and new trajectories, but it’s also about being a steward of this place right now while preparing for what comes next.”

The Lyon College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to elect Taverner as the 19th president of Lyon College on Feb. 18, making her the first woman to ascend to the role after completing an interim term. Former trustee Ruth Schmidt served as interim president for six months in 1998.
