CHEROKEE VILLAGE: From the Mayor Desk

Covid 19 message from mayor

Cherokee Village issued the following announcement on Dec. 6.

Now we are dealing with the prospect of a new variant derived from Covid-19. It is uncertain how serious this particular variant will affect people but apparently it is very contagious. Thus, practicing appropriate personal health measures as well as considering preventive actions such as vaccination or other procedures is vital to everyone’s well being.

On Thanksgiving Day, I had the opportunity to participate in serving the Community Thanksgiving Dinner to about 500 people. Thanks to the leadership of Rob Smith in organizing and carrying out this event which made for a delicious Thanksgiving for many community residents. Also, we are grateful to the CV United Methodist Church for the use of their facility to cook the food and prepare the meals for delivery. Another big thanks to all the volunteers who gave of their time on Thanksgiving Day to make this a successful event. Lastly, those individuals who gave donations when they picked up their meals to you we are extremely appreciative; as those funds will be applied to next year’s dinner.

Remember the Christmas lighting contest with prize money to be awarded in each ward for first, second, and third place. There is also a category for businesses city-wide. If you are interested in entering the contest please contact City Hall at 257-5522. Thanks to the Village Pride Committee for sponsoring this event. We will post the addresses of the entries on the city’s Facebook page; so you can drive by to enjoy the view. By the time you read this the annual Town Center Christmas lighting will have occurred. We thank the A&P Commission for hosting this special evening. Please take the time to view the window displays and other Christmas decorations around Town Center.

The City Council during a special meeting on December 2nd approved the proposed budget for 2022 which reflects reductions in revenue, expenses, and staffing. The council will be discussing a sales tax proposal at their regular December meeting. At the November council meeting two new council members were elected and sworn in that evening. The two new members are Andrew Hefley in Ward 2 and Peter Martin in Ward 4 whose terms will expire at the end of 2022.

Finally, the Christmas season is officially upon us. If you plan to travel over the holidays please travel safely. Also, remember to shop locally as it not only benefits local businesses but the local community as well. And with the possibility of cold or inclement weather; help those who are in need. If roads are unsafe to drive in the city and you need medications delivered or another emergency matter where we may be able to assist; contact our police department at 257-5225. Also during this time of the year a gift to the needy or charity of your choice will be most welcome. A Merry Christmas to all the citizens of Cherokee Village.
