The Izard County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 8 that it is encouraging residents and visitors to prioritize safety during the upcoming summer season. The office said that with more travel, community events, and time spent outdoors, taking a proactive approach can help prevent accidents and reduce injuries.
The guidance comes as the school year ends and many families prepare for vacations. The Sheriff’s Office reminded drivers to obey traffic laws, stay attentive, and remain vigilant to help keep roadways safe. As temperatures rise in the coming months, officials warned about the dangers of extreme heat—defined as periods of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees lasting two or more days—which can lead to serious health risks.
To help protect against heat-related illnesses, the Sheriff’s Office recommended checking local weather updates regularly, drinking plenty of fluids, ensuring pets have access to cool water and shade when outdoors, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles, taking cool showers or baths to lower body temperature, watching for signs of heat cramps or exhaustion, and wearing loose-fitting light-colored clothing while applying sunscreen. For further information on preparing for extreme heat and recognizing related illnesses, residents are encouraged to visit Ready.gov.
The Izard County Sheriff’s Office enhances community safety through dedicated law enforcement programs across its patrol area of 547 square miles in Arkansas; it also oversees a detention center in Melbourne and a station in Horseshoe Bend. The office collaborates with local and state agencies to improve public safety efforts throughout all of Izard County according to the official website.
“All of us at the Sheriff’s Office wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer,” officials said.
