Fulton County officials announced on Mar. 9 that homeowners have until Wednesday, April 1, to apply for a homestead exemption that could reduce their property taxes this year.

The homestead exemption is important because it can save homeowners thousands of dollars by lowering the assessed value of their primary residence. Fulton County, its cities, and school districts offer several types of exemptions based on factors such as age, income, veteran status, or disability. All homeowners are eligible for a basic exemption if the property is their main home.

According to county officials, the same application form is used for all exemptions. However, some specialized exemptions may require extra documentation. Once an application is submitted, the Fulton County Board of Assessors will determine and apply the most beneficial exemption available to each applicant. A full list of exemptions and requirements can be found at www.fultonassessor.org/exemptions.

This year introduces two new exemptions: one for residents in the Fulton County School District and another for those in Atlanta Public Schools. Homeowners who already have a basic exemption do not need to reapply; assessors will automatically apply one of the new exemptions if they qualify.

Applications can be submitted online at www.fultonassessor.org or in person at any of the six Board of Assessors offices.
