The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will present a proclamation to the Department of Public Works on May 20 as part of National Public Works Week, which takes place from May 17 to 23. The week’s theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” highlights the work and dedication of public works professionals in Fulton County.

National Public Works Week recognizes the essential role that public works staff play in maintaining infrastructure and supporting daily life. The theme for this year emphasizes how deep-rooted service and community engagement drive innovation and help build thriving communities.

Director of Public Works David Clark said, “Communities may not take much notice of the dedication of public works professionals because they just quietly do their jobs without fanfare. Yet, public works is always there, working behind the scenes to respond to emergencies and to advance quality of life for all.”

To mark the observance, several activities are planned. Wastewater tours will be held on May 19 at two facilities: Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Roswell from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and Tom Lowe Atlanta – Fulton County Water Treatment Plant in Johns Creek from noon to 1:30 p.m. On May 20, residents can meet with staff at a Division Exhibit Contest at the Government Center near downtown Atlanta between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., where they can learn about departmental services firsthand.

Fulton County manages its finances through its treasurer’s office by investing funds and distributing revenues; it also promotes community well-being by hosting events like an annual fair and supporting emergency education initiatives; it oversees facilities such as courthouses and libraries; partners with state and federal agencies for emergency management; covers an area exceeding 600 square miles; and aims to improve quality of life through services including tax collection, property assessment, and emergency coordination—all according to the official website.

The week’s activities are designed both to recognize staff contributions and inform residents about how these services impact everyday life.
